In Bay Area cities like Novato and Petaluma, we're lucky to live in a place that doesn't get unbearably hot too often. Still, a properly functioning air conditioning system is an essential component of enjoying your summer drives. A car's insulating effect can cause temps to rise quickly to uncomfortable levels, even in Northern California. And if you're planning a summer trip to southern climes, the need for air conditioning is self-explanatory.

With outside temps in the mid-to-high 70s, a partially functioning air conditioning system may not be noticeable. However, as temperatures climb into the mid-80s, inefficiencies become much more evident. At about 85 degrees, your vehicle's A/C should be capable of temperatures around 40 degrees or lower at the vent outlet (system recirculating and on maximum cooling). Once temperatures hit the mid 90's, if the A/C can't maintain 45 degrees at the vent, it won't be capable of keeping you cool and will just waste energy.

While modern A/C systems are more robust and longer-lasting, there are several reasons why one may stop working at peak efficiency. One of the most common reasons is a leak in a seal or hose, causing loss of refrigerant. Other reasons include a failing compressor or blower motor, or a clog in the refrigerant hose or expansion tube.
